Amber's Musings on Devotions

I used to dred doing devotions because I used to think that there was nothing new to learn from the Bible, I used to think that they were a waste of my precious time. The problem with thinking like that is that you go into them being bored and not looking for what God has to say to you that day in devotions. It took me many years to figure out that devotions can be an exciting part of your day, I mean discovering what God has to say to you through his Word can be really exciting.

I used to look at devotions as if they were a chore, a homework assignment, something to memorize in order to beat the competition (I was in Wesleyan Bible Bowl and we often memorized books of the Bible in order to win quizzes). It wasn't until I got out of WBB and out of high school that I started looking at devotions differently. To be honest, I didn't always treat my devotions like they were the most exciting things, there were some days when I still treated them like homework. But let me just say this before I get off and get back to my own devotions.

The Word of God is living and active, you can read the same passage 99 times and think nothing of it, and then suddenly on the 100th time something pops out and speaks to you. For instance, I have Psalm 139 many times and each time I read it something new comes to my attention. The words haven't changed, the passage hasn't changed, what has changed is what God shows me through that particular passage. My suggestion to you is to read Hebrews 4:12 and keep that in mind as you read through your devotions.

Father, my prayer is for all those who are these devotions. I pray that you will speak to them through their time in devotions. Make yourself real to them, show them what you would have them see in your Scriptures. Keep them near to your heart as they seek your face and as they draw close to you. In Christ's Name, Amen.

Devotions

What are devotions and why are they important?

Devotions are a time that you set aside to learn more about God. You spend a lot of time devoted to your school work or to your friends. This particular time we are talking about is being devoted to God and giving God the time to show himself to you in a new way.

What are your thoughts about devotions?
